The night before was heartbreaking for Mets fans. Comeback after comeback were wasted as the home team could not push across the winning run in extra innings. Finally, Albert Pujols decided matters in favor of the Cardinals with a 2 run blast off of a weary Aaron Heilman in the fourteenth. The Mets were out of pitchers, out of comebacks, and out of time.
Maybe little more than a month and a half ago, last night’s loss would have sent this Mets team into a skid. A new manager, new pitching coach, and apparent new attitude later, it would just be another loss from which to bounce back. The reason for such an optimistic outlook was that fact that today brought Johan Santana to the mound. The unspoken instructions for the team’s ace, “Get us a win and spare the bullpen while you’re at it”.
I’ve been rather lucky with my Sunday seats at Shea in terms of pitching performances. It’s hard from so high up to judge what type of stuff the pitcher has that day. So I’m forced to go purely by results. More >

Jumbo, Burt, Martin, Bavaro, Banks….
The names are engraved on the minds of every Giants fan, whispered across the years of this Super Bowl era.
Morris, Anderson, Oates, Carthon, Manuel…..
There have been many others who have played for the team during these 42 seasons. Some served much longer tenures as Giants. Others were much more talented or even statistically dominant at their given position.
Marshall, McConkey, Pepper, Hoss, Meggett…..
Their names that would become synonymous with Giants pride. Mere mention of them brought a wistful smile to any Giants fan’s face, for they had brought home football’s ultimate prize, a Super Bowl Championship. A good number of them had brought home two, the first in a rout, the second in a glorious upset.
Landeta, Banks, Carson, Simms, Taylor……
The list is not complete, simply some of the most notable. There are others who share their glory who go unmentioned here; these gridiron warriors, these champions, these forever Giants. For seventeen years they have stood alone much as the last set of champions before them had, a team that predated the Super Bowl era.
They are alone no longer.

I’ve been faced with something of a conundrum over the past few years. Anyone who knows me knows how loyal I am to the teams with whom I place my rooting allegiance. It is my place in the fandom of New York Giants football that has been the source of that conundrum.

To my beloved Devils, who I had ripped rather savagely in a post here just a few scant days ago, all I have to say is, “You’re Forgiven”.
Even you, Johnny Oduya, despite another brain cramp of a play that cost Marty his first shutout of the season. It didn’t lose the game and it is Thanksgiving, so I’m feeling rather magnanimous.
The evening started off with my brother and I heading into Pittsburgh. I chose to wear full Devils’ colors as I normally do. My brother chose not to call a lawyer to keep on standby even though we were going to be in opposition territory and I was going to be hard to miss.

Six hours, three hundred eighty miles, one very large coffee, and a tank and a half of gas later, I find myself at the home of my brother and sister-in-law in Washington, PA. For reference, Washington is probably about 30 miles south-southwest of Pittsburgh, close to the southwest corner of Pennsylvania.
This is my third trip out here since my first Thanksgiving trip a year ago with three of the four trips being by car. I flew out here in August to dog/cat/bunny/goldfish watch while my brother and his wife went on their honeymoon. It’s a pretty safe bet that I’ll never do that again. From the time I had left my apartment in August to get to the airport, got on the plane, flew here, got my bags, and my brother had driven us back to the house, I’d have arrived by car about the same time. I’m not even going to talk about the horror show that was my flight back.
